Energy Efficient Homes in Pakistan

Cloud Villas proudly launches Energy Efficient homes in Pakistan. Normally houses built in Pakistan under common practices have very high energy requirements. These houses are extremely hot in summer and very cold in winter. Due to which we have to spend a lot on energy resources to keep our houses cold in summer and hot in winter’s travel diaries.

We have extreme weather conditions in our country. Let’s take example of Islamabad; in summer temperature may go up-to 47 degree Celsius, while in winter it may reach 0 degree Celsius. In Pakistan common houses are normally built with English bond masonry and concrete slab roofs. Both roof and walls don’t have any insulation layer and are directly exposed to heat coming from sun and vice versa in winter. Both being good conductors of heat simply transfer the heat from outside to inside of the house. Another big problem is that our houses are not air tight. Doors used are not sealed especially from the bottom. Windows are not sealed as well; dust, warm air in summer and cold air in winter easily travels from outside to inside through usual aluminum windows. Commonly used Glass commonly in windows allows IR rays to enter house without any kind of insulation/reflection. All of these factors make the house hotter in summer and cooler in winter, which makes a house less comfortable and increase the energy requirements.

To overcome these issues we have done thorough working during planning phase of cloud villas. We have engaged the subject experts, who have prepared energy simulation model of our villas. These simulations were done for our villas keeping in view Islamabad’s Temperature conditions,

Sun directions, Wind speed/direction, Moisture and humidity etc throughout the year. Based upon these inputs energy requirement for cooling and heating of these villas were calculated.

We have done these simulations twice with the following building designs:

  1. Baseline building (standard building under commonly used construction practices.)
  2. Upgraded building (after implementing the recommended modifications)

Upon getting Baseline building statistics, some recommendations were made by experts. These recommendations include use of masonry based upon Rat trap bond in the walls which are directly exposed to sun. Rat trap bond is frequently used in south India. It enhances the insulation of the wall. Its strength is equal to English bond used in Pakistan. Roof top surface is planned to be heat reflecting by using glazed white objects. Use of 100% ceiling is planned on the top floor to provide an extra layer of insulation. UPVC windows with shade on every window and Single glazed Low E glass is planned in Cloud Villas. UPVC windows are airtight while Low E glass reflects the infra red heat rays and maintain the temperature of the room.

After implementing these modifications in the upgraded building design simulation was done again. It was observed that Energy requirements were reduced to more than 30%. (This calculation is based upon Building Energy Index “BEI”).

Moreover we are also offering couple of Add-Ons as an option to our customers. These include Rock-wool insulation layer on the roof of first floor to further enhance the insulation. We are also offering geothermal heating/cooling (passive building) as an option. These Add-Ons are extremely cost effective (very low priced) and have huge impact on the temperature conditions of the houses in addition to 30% mentioned above.

Thus Cloud Villas will have lesser energy requirements. These villas will be less hot in summer and less cold in winter as compared to any other house built with common practices. These villas are designed to give modern look with comfortable and cozy feelings to its residents.
